The Save Our Seas Shark Centre

WITH THE SUPPORT of a wonderful team, I realised a vision and established the Save Our Seas Shark Centre (SOSSC) in May 2008. We are a scientific research, education and awareness centre funded by the Save Our Seas Foundation. We are a small but powerful team. Dr Leonard Compagno is our director of scientific research, Alison Kock is our field biologist, Charmaine Grobbelar my PA and operations manager, Verona Smith is our educator, Mathew is responsible for our front of house and store manager, Zaneli is responsible for the Centre house-keeping and front of house, and I am the executive manager and director of education and awareness. Adam Carnegie is our graphic artist and designer, and Michael Carnegie assists us with rock pool lessons, while Glenn Sieler helps me in the edit suite. We work with a number of other individuals on various projects, and have many partners and sponsors, including volunteers that help us make a difference.

The SOSSC runs exciting school programmes and outreach programmes which include interactive lessons on sharks and the ocean, including hands-on rock pool lesson right across the road from the Centre. We are open to the public offering guided tours, displays of various research projects, a donation store, a large fish tank displaying local species, screenings of numerous documentaries produced by the SOS Foundation, including others, as well as popular talks given by one of our team members. The SOSSC is also involved in numerous other exciting awareness initiatives: ocean and beach clean-ups, running the Rethink the Shark campaign, producing documentaries, participating in festivals, and much more.

You can book an outreach programme, or bring a tourist group to visit us; or just pop in and meet the team. The SOSSC is open week days 10am to 4pm and Saturdays 9am to 3.30pm Street Address: 28 Main Road, Kalk Bay, CapeTown. Tel: +27 (0) 21 7886694

The purpose of the Centre is to improve the public's understanding of sharks and marine conservation through scientific research, education and awareness projects. Our education and awareness mission statement is RETHINK THE SHARK!
